Israel, Tel Aviv - Boardwalk

Also known as the Tel Aviv-Yafo Beach Promenade, the Tel Aviv Boardwalk is spread out along  parts of Israel's Mediterranean coastline. This stretch of prime beachfront real estate extends from the north of the city to the south towards Jaffa. It is dotted by expensive hotels offering unblocked and awesome views of the Mediterranean Sea.

 History and Geography

This promenade is also known as Tayelet in Hebrew. It's origin can be traced back as far as the 1930s when the then City Council decided on the construction of the promenade. Following the outbreak of World War II, the city's beaches were neglected and the seas along the beach ended up as a de facto dumping ground for sewages.

Following the building of a sewage plant in the area in the 1980s, the discharge of sewage into the seas ended. Gradually, cleanup works enabled the beaches along the promenade to be opened up to the public again. A current project to connect the various sections of the promenade into a continuous boardwalk is underway.

Climate

The climate of Tel Aviv is usually hot and humid in the summers with temperatures ranging between the mid-40°C range during the days to the high-20°C range in the nights. In the mild winter months, the average temperatures in the day can go as high as 30°C while average temperatures in the nights can be as low as single digit in the °C range.

Getting There

If you are staying in  the hotels along the Tel Aviv beachfront, then the promenade is right by the beach. You can choose to walk north along the beach or south towards Jaffa Town.

If you are not staying along the beachfront, then driving is an option. But finding parking spaces can be a challenging and often frustrating experience.

What to Expect

During weekends (i.e. Fridays and Saturdays in Israel), you can expect to find locals cycling, walking and jogging along the beach. In the summer months, the whole stretch of promenade becomes a lot more livelier with bathers crowding the beach and lots of activities that continued from the early morning hours to late nights.

Lots of cool cafes can be found along the promenade and you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to chilling out and dining.

The area in the north of the promenade has an organic market which sells really interesting items. This market is open on weekends. In the south near Jaffa Town, there are large open spaces where families gathered for picnics and barbecues.
