Bucket List: Travelling through the Scottish Highlands

Image
United Kingdom,  Scotland, Scottish Highlands This article was first published on thus blog in July 2018. Unlike many others, my Travel Bucket List do not include items like climbing Mount Everest, Skydiving in New Zealand or Scuba Diving the Great Barrier Reef. The items on my  Travel Bucket List are far more humble and mundane. I list places that I have read from books when I was a kid but was too poor to travel then. While I am still not well-off, I can at least still fulfil some of the items in my  Travel Bucket List through careful planning and budgeting.  One of the items on my not-so-awesome  Travel Bucket List is to travel through the Scottish  Highlands. This, I achieved in 2011 when I visited Scotland for the first time. My next  Travel Bucket List associated with Scotland is to travel through Scotland by train. I love trains and I love the countryside of Scotland. Combined, such a trip will fulfil not one but two items on my...

Travel Bits: April 2025

Another cruise upcoming.....  My first trip of 2025 was a 8-nights cruise from Singapore to Bali and Lombok and back to Singapore onboard Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas in February and March. My next trip will commence in slightly more than a week from today, and it is another cruise. This time, I will be sailing one-way from Singapore to Hong Kong on a 5-nights cruise with a single Port Day in Vietnam's Chan May. One-way cruise entails a lot more logistics planning, including the booking of one-way air ticket to return home. As we all know, purchasing one-way tickets do not make much economical sense because it is usually a lot more expensive than paying for a pair of return air tickets; based on cost per flight mile. This is when my air miles, accrued over the years from my credit card usage and other flights come into play. When redeeming air miles for flight tickets, airlines typically charge based on per flight. Therefore, if I am to redeem a pair of return tickets, ...

Bucket List: Sakura on the shores of Lake Biwa

Image
Japan,  Tokyo This article was first published on thus blog in June 2018. Spring has always been the season welcomed by those living in places where the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter can be experienced. It signifies the beginning of a new year with new dreams as the snow of winter melts and the warm of spring brings forth blooms of flowers. In spring of 2018, I was in Takashima in Japan's Shiga Prefecture. Staying at a hotel on the shores of Lake Biwa, I was literally transported into a magical world of flowers in the midst of sakura blooms as I found myself surrounded by the snow-like falls of the petals of the sakura whenever the wind blew.  A truly beautiful moment of peace and tranquility, an experience worthy of inclusion in any Travel Bucket List. ****************** Spring is generally a good season to visit any temperate countries. This is the season where wild flowers bloom aplenty and the weather is typically mild and cool. In Japan, a visit d...

Indonesia, Lombok - Fishing Village

Image
While on a short trip to Lembar in the Indonesian island of Lombok, I saw these simple contraptions out at sea. They appeared to be fish traps to me. Of course, they could also be small floating fish farms.  I took this photo because to me, these structures out at sea made for a rather photogenic subject. With the green hills, shoreline and the small village huts in the background, this is a beautiful and idyllic setting for a fishing village scene. Returning from my first trip of 2025.....  I just returned from my first trip of 2025. It was a 8-nights cruise from Singapore to Bali and Lombok and back to Singapore onboard Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas. I had visited Bali multiple times before because it is a favourite vacation destination for me and is only about 2-hours by flight from Singapore. I had however, only visited Lombok once before, in 2014! The sailing from Singapore to Bali actually took slightly more than two days and I am glad to say I finally get to sail across the Java Sea. 🛳 While I did not take any land excursions during the three Port Days of the cruise, I did disembark from the ship each time to walk around the vicinities of the port areas just to take in the sights and sounds. I must say that I felt I actually enjoyed the port days more this way as I get to interact with the locals and to simply spend the short time at port to discover what each port has to offer the random cruise visitor like mys...

Estonia, Tallinn - Medieval Europe in the 21st Century

Image
It has been quite a while since I last visited Europe. I am sure many things have changed since my last trip to the continent. But, many things probably remain the same. The food, the culture and the beautiful architecture that I have come to associate Europe with. My favourite city in Europe is Tallinn. The capital of Estonia is geographically small compared to many other European capital cities. But what it lacks in size, Tallinn makes up for in depth.  With its many well-preserved medieval buildings and structures, Tallinn certainly punches above its weight in history and culture. Its Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and includes many notable buildings and structures dating back centuries. Toompea Castle is more than 800 years old, the Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral with its beautiful architecture is a sight to behold and the Town Hall is one of the oldest City Hall in northern Europe, if not the oldest. If I do travel to Europe for my next vacation, ...

Bucket List: Tokyo International Pen Show 2024

Image
Japan,  Tokyo This article was first published on my other blog, Monde des Stylos . This other bloc entered on anything and everything related to Pens and Stationery. Since I started using fountain pens a few years ago, I have always wanted to attend the Tokyo International Pen Show (TIPS). Thus, being able to be at TIPS 2024 is definitely an unlocking of one of my Travel Bucket List items. And to be able to attend TIPS with my Japanese friend, who is a fellow fountain pen user, certainly made the event even more meaningful for me. ****************** This was my very first time attending a pen show. I did not actually planned to attend this event. But somehow, my travel dates to Japan in autumn of 2024 coincided with the show. Realising this, I gladly took the opportunity to include the show into my travel itinerary and through social media, managed to get in touch with a kind gentleman based in Tokyo who helped me with my event ticket booking. Thus, on 3 November 2024, I attended ...
