Bucket List: Self-Drive in a Desert

Image
Negev Desert, Israel The Negev Desert is located in the southern region of Israel. The largest city in the area is Beersheba (a.k.a. Be'er Sheva ). Generally unpopulated, except for Beersheba, nomadic Bedouins do live here in temporary accommodations whilst moving with their livestock according to the seasons. A Bedouin and his livestock, Negev Desert, Israel (2017) This was my first visit to a real desert. In this trip, my travelling companions and I opted to self-drive. Moving in two separate vehicles, the eight of us explored the desert, marvelling at the natural beauty of the area. Along our drives, we stopped frequently and disembarked from our rented vehicles to marvel at the picturesque sceneries and also for those selfies. Travelling........ Through Books Books are our personal windows to the world. This is especially true at a time when leisure travel is next to impractical because of border restrictions and closures due to the current COIVD-19 pandemic. The next best thing to travel, besides watching travel programmes on television, is reading. Yes, reading is something we can enjoy anywhere, anytime. And at this time when we are all cooped up at home or in our home city, there is no better way to beat the boredom than to curl up in our reading chair or sofa with a good book. And for travel bugs like myself, well, books on travel or travel-related stuff. Books fire up our imaginations. And when our imaginations are alive and soaring, we can figuratively travel to anywhere our mind takes us. Grab a book and start "travelling" from home or wherever you are. Read, imagine and soar across any mountain peaks you wish, from the comfort of home. Its all in the mind. :-) Soaring above the skylark; th

Switzerland, Zurich - Airline Lounge with a View

I loved travelling. It was not so long ago that travelling was as easy as going online to book my return air tickets and hotel accommodation before jetting off to the destination on the day of the outbound flight.  In particular, if I had the opportunity to travel in the premier classes of a flight, the flight itself was as much an important part of my trip as any other expected travel experiences such as dining on local cuisines, meeting the locals, sight-seeing and enjoying the local culture and practices.  At times, I pampered myself by spending my hard-earned cash on a return Business Class ticket at promotional rates. Or I redeemed my expiring miles for a discounted Business Class ticket. And on some rare occasions, the airlines actually kindly and generously upgraded me to the next class of seat from my purchased ticket. How the upgrade works still baffles me. I supposed it all boils down to pure luck. But I really don't know. Travelling in the premier classes of a flight acc

Cambodia, Siem Reap - Life on the Tonlé Sap

Image
The Tonl é  Sap is a huge freshwater lake that connects to the Mekong River via the Tonl é  Sap River. The Tonl é  Sap is unique in that its size varies widely throughout the year as the rainy and dry seasons come and go. The lake is at its largest size typically during the months of September and October due to the southwest monsoon. Conversely, it is generally at its smallest size at the end of the dry season in the month of April. The difference in the lake's size between these two extremes can be as much as six times. Life on the lake,  Tonl é  Sap, Siem Reap, Cambodia (2015) The lake is home to many people. These folks live on floating houses, studied in floating schools, shop at floating platforms and travel on small boats. The lake is their life and their lives centred around the lake and the Tonl é  Sap River.  This article showcase the lives of the people who called the Tonl é  Sap home. As the old saying "a picture tells a thousand words" goes, I will let these
