Israel, Tel Aviv - Weekend Morning Market

Many cities have their own weekend morning markets. These include local farmers' markets in many European cities to flea markets in Asian cities. 

The most interesting aspect is that you never know what you are going to discover and see in the often varied and distinctly different stalls that collectively gave a vibrant and exciting feel to these markets. Because most of the stalls are typically operated by folks who do so on a part-time basis, this usually means that each time you visit the same market, you may not get to see the same stalls all the time. In a way, each visit can be a vastly different experience in itself. It is like going to a whole new weekend market on every visit, the only constant being the location and the operating hours.

In the old city of Jaffa just north of the main thoroughfares of bustling Tel Aviv, there is a vibrant culture of weekend markets. From memory, I can count at least two that are usually open on Friday mornings. For those who may not know, Fridays and Saturdays are the days that make up the weekends in Israel.

Just take a relaxing stroll around Jaffa and you will somehow stumble onto these markets, no directions are required. It is that simple!

During one of my visits on a Friday morning, I came upon a stall that was selling old-school toys. Being a toy collector and enthusiast, I naturally got attracted to the merchandise on display at this stall. How many of the toys in this photograph are you able to identify from your childhood years? :-)

Horsburgh Lighthouse (or Horsburgh) is located on an outlying small island (a.k.a Pedra Branca meaning "White Rock" in Portuguese) near the entrance to the east of the Straits of Singapore. Cambodia, Siem Reap - Wall Sculptures at Angkor Wat

In many places of great historical and cultural significances around the world, wall sculptures left by generations before us convey messages of events past. Such messages are recorded versions of history of the places where they are found.  I have always been fascinated by how our ancient ancestors were able to faithfully convey events that would otherwise require many pages of descriptive words, through a series of wall sculptures. The creative ingenuities, stone masonry skills and storytelling talents of our ancient forebears were translated into these beautiful and amazing wall sculptures that allow us of later generations, to learn and study the civilisations that preceded us. Estonia, Tallinn - Palace of Ungern-Sternberg

I was awestruck by the grandness and magnificence of this building during my walking tour of the Old Town of Tallinn. While there, I had no opportunity to enter the building itself. Thus, admiring its facade and photographing its structure as I walked around its perimeter had to suffice.  The  Palace of Ungern-Sternberg, Tallinn, Estonia (2017) Without knowing what this building was, its history and its name, the photographs I took allowed me to conduct basic research on it after the trip.  Based on my rudimentary research into the building long after my trip to Tallinn, I was to discover that it was built in the year 1865 by the German architect, Martin Gropius. Also known as the Palace of Ungern-Sternberg, the building is today the home of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
